As part of a major improvement to visitor facilities and interpretation presentation, the Lincoln Castle Revealed project is intended to significantly increase visitor numbers and enhance the visitor experience.

The Prison buildings are to be substantially renovated to provide extensive interpretive material and displays within the original cells areas, whilst retaining the atmosphere and character of a Victorian prison. The front range of the prison is to become the main ticketing and visitor reception point, along with educational and conference areas, restaurant and hygiene facilities.

Lincoln Castle currently displays original copies of Magna Carta and Charter of the Forest. A new introduction AV cinema and environmentally controlled display room for these important historic documents are to be provided within an underground vault with an entrance above within the Prison ‘Exercise Yard’.

As part of the development, the parapet wall walk is to be made accessible by the provision of a new free standing lift incorporated into a contemporary stairwell and platform system and new parapet walkways, to allow less able visitors to appreciate the magnificent high level views of the Castle walls, buildings, and the nearby medieval cathedral within historic Upper Lincoln.

The building is to be provided with a turf ‘green roof' with a rainwater-reclaimed irrigation system, which acts as a thermal regulator in addition to integrating aesthetically with the surrounding setting.
